in mollusc hatcheries. Consequently, we assessed themost commonly used species to establish their growth and size profiles, their cytomorphological, biochemical, biomolecular identification as well as their cytometer signs, and also their ability to grow under extreme conditions of temperature and salinity. This work aimed at matching the conformity of the strains used in Argenton (dispatched to most of the French commercial hatcheries) to those of a referenced culture collection. A previous screening preceded this study, because of the 45 species and/or clones held originally, Argenton kept no more than 15 species. As most of the latter are also represented in referenced collection, our strains are therefore correctly identified. On the other hand, the...

Analysis of larval oyster grazing by flow cytometry ArchiMer
Chretiennot-dinet, Marie-josèphe; Vaulot, Daniel; Galois, Robert; Spano, Anna-maria; Robert, Rene.
The ingestion of 8 algal species by oyster larvae (Crassostrea gigas Thunberg, 1793) was measured by flow cytometry (FCM). In a preliminary experiment, cell size (estimated by light scatter) and chlorophyll fluorescence of 30 algal species were evaluated to select those species which could be mixed together and still be easily discriminated by FCM. Grazing experiments were carried out over 48 h with 6 and 15-day old larvae fed on 3 algal mixtures, each containing 3 different algal species. The concentration of each species was estimated at 0, 6, 12, 24 and 48 h by FCM. Grazing pressure on a given algal species was dependent upon the age of the larvae, the time of the day and the composition of the mixture. Grazing rates of older larvae were about twice...

Chemical, isotopic and enzymatic monitoring of free and enclosed seawater : implications for primary production estimates in incubation bottles ArchiMer
Collos, Yves; Descolas Gros, Chantal; Fontugne, Michel; Mortain-bertrand, A; Chretiennot-dinet, Marie-josèphe; Frikha, Mg.
Enclosing seawater samples in incubation bottles had 3 main effects on the phytoplankton: first, a large (5-fold in 12 h) increase of phytoplankton biomass, due to the release of grazing pressure by herbivores, Second, an increase (2-fold in 6 h) in ribulose biphosphate carboxylase specific activity (per unit chlorophyll a), which could be due to a smaller dependence on regenerated production (less heterotrophy on excreted compounds). This was also supported by a tight relationship between phosphoenol pyruvate carboxykinase activity and dissolved ammonium. Finally, the large changes in the carbon isotopic composition of the incubated particulate matter, which were highly dependent on the dissolved inorganic nitrogen concentration, were due mainly to...

Nouvelle méthode pour étudier la nutrition de jeunes larves de Crassostrea gigas (Thunberg) en milieu naturel. Premières données expérimentales ArchiMer
His, Edouard; Robert, Rene; Chretiennot-dinet, Marie-josèphe.
This paper describes a new technique for isolating unicellular algae which are thought to play a role ine the feeding fo bivalve larvae. The results are compared with the data obtained from experimental culture of bivalve larvae under controlled conditions. Effectively ingested algal strains can be isolated by this technique. The food value of one strain obtained as monsopecific culture is demonstrated.

Utilisation des "algues-fourrage" en aquaculture ArchiMer
Chretiennot-dinet, Marie-josèphe; Robert, Rene; His, Edouard.
Studies concerned with unicellular algae as a food source for laval and post-larval stages of commercially valuable bivalves are reviewed. As only about ten species of microalgae are now produced in large quantities in commercial hatcheries, these are described and their main characteristics illustrated. Finally the properties which make tem a suitable source of food for rearing bivalves are discussed.
